Indonesian Avocado Juice (Jus Alpukat)
A more unusual way to dispense with an avocado, this refreshing, soul-quenching drink combines the fruit with condensed milk and a punchy chocolate syrup.
Literally known as ‘jus alpukat’ or ‘avocado juice’, this drink isn’t technically a juice, but rather a milkshake. Avocados are combined with water and condensed milk - plus ice if you want it cold - and blended to a smooth, silky drink. It’s also not uncommon to use tomatoes in this drink instead of the avocados either! A good nip of lime juice in here adds a bright quality and enhances the natural flavour of the avocado, which you can appreciate much more in this drink. The crucial edge is serving it in a glass with a chocolate syrup lashed inside, usually with coffee added to it too. I have provided a recipe for that too. The syrup itself is divine, so use that to control the strength of your drink. It’s something fresh and new to do with spare avocados, even if they’re not quite ripe. Let’s go!
INGREDIENTS (serves 2x)
CHOCOLATE SYRUP
40g cocoa powder
100g sugar
100ml water
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tsps instant coffee granules - optional
JUS ALPUKAT
2x ripe avocados
small handful of ice - optional
300-400ml water
6-8 tablespoons condensed milk
1 tablespoon of lime juice
pinch of salt
WALKTHROUGH
First let’s make the chocolate syrup. In a saucepan, combine the 40g cocoa and 100g sugar. Mix until blended then slowly whisk in the 100ml of water. Place the pan onto a medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle, boil, stirring often. Once slightly thickened, turn off the heat and allow it to cool.
Once cool, add the 1 tsp vanilla extract and 2 tsps instant coffee granules, if using. Mix until combined and transfer the syrup to a bottle. It can be stored in the fridge for up to 10 days.
To make the just alpukat, add the 2 avocados, handful of ice, 300ml of water, 6-8 tablespoons of condensed milk, 1 tablespoon of lime juice and pinch of salt to a blender. Blend the mixture until smooth. Add a little water to thin it if needed, and adjust the taste with more condensed milk or lime juice.
To serve, drizzle some chocolate syrup around the inside of a drinking glass. Add a few cubes of ice and pour your jus alpukat into the glass. Stir it well as you drink and enjoy it with a straw.
