Karachi-Style Fish Biryani (چھلی بریانی)
The coastal city of Karachi is well-known for their seafood version of traditional Pakistani biryani - a fragrant pot of rice heaving with golden ingots of spiced fish.
The city of Karachi has been a fishing hub for almost 1000 years, first established by a fisherwoman named Mai Kolachi. Her small fishing settlement evolved into a buzzing metropolis and major sea port for Pakistan - Karachi - where the residents are famous for their love of seafood. Traditional Pakistani dishes are reworked with fresh seafood, and biriyani is an excellent case in point. Karachi is well-known in Pakistan for producing a delectable fish biryani, combining rice and fragrant biryani spices with a breath of the sea. You can use any tender white fish here - and I encourage you to use whatever sea or river fish is local for you. Any fish will carry masala and the aromatics extremely well, producing a tantalising biryani that’s heaving with fragrant rice and golden ingots of spiced fish. Let’s go!
